Workshop Description:
(Based on LeeAnn’s soon-to-be published book: Making Words Their Own, Crystal Spring, 2008, Co-Authored with Linda Allen)
All children have a variety of background knowledge and understanding of concepts and words. So, where does a classroom teacher start with vocabulary instruction when there are such a variety of levels of understanding? In this workshop, you will explore how to help all students learn vocabulary words successfully for long-term memory. Students will be able to process their vocabulary words in a way that is meaningful, and therefore, memorable. Teachers will learn:

  • How vocabulary fits into a well-balanced reading program
  • The step-by-step directions to plan vocabulary lessons beginning with the unit and extending into the daily lesson plan
  • The most current research about vocabulary development
  • How to help students receive words, review words and retrieve words at their particular level so that memory of these words will occur
  • How to help students incorporate recognized words into their writing and speaking vocabulary
  • And Much More!

Teachers will walk out of this workshop with more than 50 strategies to improve vocabulary instruction in their classrooms.
